Inside Amazon’s Billionth Sustainable US Package Delivery
In A Major Landmark for The Sustainability Of The Logistics Industry, Amazon Has Delivered Its Billionth Package By Electric Vehicle
Amazon has reached a monumental milestone, delivering one billion packages in the United States using electric vehicles (EVs). The achievement marks a major step forward in transforming the logistics industry.
By integrating EVs into its extensive delivery network, Amazon has reshaped last-mile delivery—the final leg of the supply chain where packages are delivered to customers’ doorsteps—proving that innovation and environmental responsibility can coexist seamlessly.
The impact of one billion electric deliveries
Reflecting on this milestone, Kara Hurst, Amazon’s Chief Sustainability Officer, comments: “It couldn’t have happened without the incredible delivery associates and more than 20,000 electric vans now delivering to customers in thousands of cities from coast to coast.”
Kara emphasises how these changes are designed to be invisible to customers while driving significant environmental impact: “Our one billionth delivery didn’t arrive with a big red bow, so the customer probably didn’t know the difference.
“But that’s the point. We want every customer to experience reliable and fast delivery, regardless of the changes we’re making behind the scenes.”
The company is aiming for a fleet of at least 100,000 EVs on the road by 2030, cementing its leadership in sustainable logistics.
Paving the way for electric logistics
Amazon’s journey to revolutionise its delivery network began years ago and has involved strategic partnerships, significant investments and phased rollouts:
- 2020: Amazon ordered 1,800 electric vans from Mercedes-Benz for Europe, with 500 allocated to the UK.
- 2022: A partnership with Rivian introduced custom-designed electric delivery vans, with Amazon targeting the deployment of 10,000 vehicles by the end of the year.
- 2023: By October, Amazon reported 10,000 Rivian electric vans actively delivering across the United States.
The road to electrification is ambitious but necessary. With the e-commerce boom driving increased delivery demands, EVs are revolutionising last-mile delivery operations, providing cost savings, environmental benefits and operational efficiency.
A Glimpse Into the Future
Amazon’s one billionth electric delivery is more than just a number—it signals a larger movement towards sustainable logistics and sets a new standard for the industry.
By deploying advanced technology and fostering partnerships with innovators like Rivian, Amazon is not only reducing its carbon footprint but also demonstrating how the supply chain can evolve to meet modern demands.
